Two more Love Thy Neighbour shows for 2012!

Hello again readers!

Two more shows for the early part of 2012 have just been confirmed; one featuring Nat Baldwin of Dirty Projectors and the other is the Upset The Rhythm Kingdom Tour featuring Gentle Friendly, Way Through and Peepholes!

Double-bassist Nat Baldwin has an impressive résumé. He's studied under free jazz guru Anthony Braxton, contributed to Department of Eagles' In Ear Park as well as Vampire Weekend's Contra, and is a member of Dirty Projectors. Over the course of nine years, he's also recorded several solo full-lengths (not to mention a split collaboration with Extra Life) that are equally varied. People Changes, his fifth, is a rich addition. He's just had a fantastic review in Pitchfork.

He comes to Brighton on Monday 30th January to play at The Hope. Tickets can be purchased here; http://www.wegottickets.com/event/147898

Here is a fine video for Weights, taken from his most recent album; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e68FjMz7ue8.Or, you can hear the album on Spotify here; Nat Baldwin – People Changes

Over the last eight years Upset The Rhythm have inexhaustibly sought out the best underground sounds from all over the world. With fifty releases under their belt and their inspired series of YES WAY festivals they continually focus the spotlight on the UK’s own idiosyncratic DIY music. February 2012 sees the label hit the road with three incredibly inventive bands from their native soil to bring their pastoral punk, junked rhythms and tribal synth dance parties to the near and far of the United Kingdom.

GENTLE FRIENDLY are a duo from London, comprised of David Morris and Richard Manber, who have a penchant for circular melodies, tidal fuzz and rapid junked rhythms. 2009 saw Gentle Friendly release their debut album 'Ride Slow' to critical acclaim, with Pitchfork even citing Clipse and Lil Wayne as influences on the band. Bringing us up to date, new EP 'Rrrrrrr' is the first fruit to fall from the tree, with its seven tracks washing the band's insistent prism punk alongside more tender, filmic textures.

WAY THROUGH are a pastoral punk duo originally from Shropshire, now residing in London. Informed by the field as much as the flyover, Way Through write songs which phase in and out with guitar, tapes, damaged drums and vocals.    Their debut album 'Arrow Shower' is out now on Upset The Rhythm, alongside the band's new deep map project of London's East End.

PEEPHOLES are Katia Barrett (drums, vocals) and Nick Carlisle (keyboards). The Brighton / London duo formed in 2006 after bonding over a Chinese violin and the quietest of music. Walking a tightrope between underground punk and dance music, Peepholes write cloaked anthems as likely to open celestial gates with keys of repetition as to soundtrack a slow motion fairground accident. Their sound is otherworldly, aching with wild beats, echoing with cavernous atmospheres.

Love Thy Neighbour's Free Entry Christmas Special!

'Woah there, two Love Thy Neighbour updates in one week, what the hell is going on here?' I hear you ask. Well, we have a new show to announce AND we need to remind you about our final show of the year; our Free Entry Christmas special at The Hope on Friday.

Firstly, our Xmas special. It features 3 of our favourite local acts and is completely free! Headlining is Tense Men, a two piece featuring Sauna Youth / Cold Pumas member Ollie. Bands like Woven Bones come to mind as they mix shoegaze, punk, pop and noise. But enough of of the lazy comparisons and genre pigeon-holing, hear them here: http://tensemen.tumblr.com/

TENSE MEN by TENSE MEN

Main support comes from Speak Galactic, another duo, although up until recently were more of a one-man-orchestra, employing an array of pedals, samplers, a guitar and vocals. Now featuring a live drummer, the band continue to paint an incredible wash of textures, but now with added live punch! http://soundcloud.com/speakgalactic/sets/speak-galactic/

Speak Galactic by speakgalactic

First on are a band who have been causing quite a stir in industry circles lately and are well worth checking out. Hockeysmith revolve around the sister duo of Annabel and Georgina, but upset this show's numeric equality by actually being a four piece. Their internet presence has been minimal / mysterious, but they released the below video which indicates their sound; a pop infused grunge / rock act. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6WMsg2oe5c&feature=youtu.be

Secondly, we're proud to announce that we're co-promoting Shearwater's return to Brighton with our good friends One Inch Badge. It will be at the Haunt on Friday 30th March and you can get tickets here:  http://www.seetickets.com/Event/SHEARWATER/The-Haunt/606988 // http://www.wegottickets.com/event/146840 // http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/ // Resident Music (01273 606312) // Rounder Records (01273 325440).

That's all for now,

Remember Remember join Errors at the Haunt

I'm really happy to announce that Remember Remember will be joining Errors at The Haunt on 15th February 2012. Like Errors, Remember Remember are also on Mogwai's Rock Action label and released one of my favourite albums of 2008. They also supported Growing at The Freebutt on my birthday, which was rather nice. Since then, they have released 'The Quickening', which has picked up rave reviews from sources as disparate as The Stool Pigeon and Mojo. If you are on spotify, you can hear said album here; Remember Remember – The Quickening

Errors themselves are on tour in support of their new album 'Have Some Faith in Magic', which is out on 30th January 2012. You can download a track from this here; http://www.havesomefaithinmagic.com/?pg=2. Needless to say, we're psyched to have them back after their rather intimate show at The Hope last year.

Tickets are available from Resident, Rounder, Ape and http://www.wegottickets.com/event/142696

This Promoter Needs Guns

Not really. I just did a joke with the band's name...

I'm pretty damn happy to announce that This Town Needs Guns will be coming back to Brighton after their sell out show with Tubelord at The Prince Albert back in 2009. They shall be playing in Sticky Mike's Frog Bar on Friday 2nd December.

For those who don't know, Oxford's This Town Needs Guns have been around since 2004 and make mathy rock music influenced by the likes of Owls, American Football and Make Believe. Their debut album 'Animals' was released in 2008 by acclaimed indie Big Scary Monsters and Sargent House (Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Maps and Atlases, Hella, Boris, Russian Circles...). Their new album is being recorded next month with Ed Rose (Appleseed Cast, Get Up Kids, Motion City Soundtrack, etc.), so this show will preview some of their new tracks as well as a new line up, with Pennines Henry Tremain joining the ranks.

Tickets are £7.00 in advance and are available in Resident Music (01273 606312), Rounder Records (01273 325440), Ape Music, Seetickets, WeGotTickets and AltTickets.

In other news, I have 2 or 3 more shows that I can announce shortly. Dunno why I'm telling you that really, mildly pointless to say the least. Just watch this space or something. Actually, I know for a fact that I can announce one of them on 28th September, so keep an eye out here or on the Love Thy Neighbour facebook page.

Right. Here's a video then. It's an old one I'm afraid, but it's a goodun...

We Were Promised Jetpacks in Brighton!

Yes Yes!

Their first show in Brighton since their sold out show at The Freebutt nearly 2 years ago, We Were Promised Jetpacks return, this time at Sticky Mike's Frog Bar.

Pretty exciting stuff, but there is more my good friend, the band are also releasing a new album on 3rd October through the bloody fabulous FatCat Records. Entitled ‘In The Pit Of The Stomach’, it bears testimony to the poise, control, confidence and vigour the band now command (at least that's what the press release says, I haven't heard it yet).

It continues: Post the release of their ‘These Four Walls’ debut in June 2009 the band have achieved huge success touring America and Europe, highlights of which include selling out New York’s Williamsburg Music Hall and attracting high-profile support slots for gold-selling US rock bands like Passion Pit and Jimmy Eat
World.

With thunderous live performances matching the power of fellow Scot’s Mogwai and a pop sensibility comparable to that of Foals or Bloc Party, ‘In The Pit Of The Stomach’ proves how WWPJ have stealthily become a fully-fledged rock band - louder, wilder, avidly literate, fiercely melodic, powerfully restrained.

So yeah, you'd have to be a music PR to call a tour with Passion Pit a highlight, but there you go. For one, I'm psyched to hear the band's new material, These Four Walls was one of my highlights of 2009.

Tickets are £7 in advance, you can get your filthy mits on them at Rounder (01273 325440), Resident (01273 606312) and Ape, or you can get an eticket here: WeGotTickets or here: Seetickets

Here's a video, this was filmed at the Doug Fir in Portland, which is a fantastic venue and has very patient and good natured staff, even if you do end up having to leave your van in their loading bay for 24 extra hours due to someone taking the keys to Canada.

Love Inks debut UK tour hits Brighton

Hello again,

After ducking out for the summer, we have another awesome show in September (plus we're still to announce our clubnight in September...). It features Austin, Texas band Love Inks, whose album E.S.P is one of the most addictive I've heard in recent months that's for sure. It's a dreamy pop gem of an album and I love it. It came out on bloody great Italian label Hell, Yes! (Crocodiles, Dum Dum Girls...) and is sure to be on many people's stereo over the summer.

The show is at Sticky Mike's Frog Bar on 27th September. Tickets are available from Resident Music (01273 606312), Rounder Records (01273 325440), Ape, Seetickets and WeGotTickets

I've already put one video up on the site (see what I did there?!), so here's another. It's not to my taste completely, but the song is rad.

Man Man! In Brighton! EXCITEMENT!

Howdy,

I'm pretty damn excited about this one. Man Man are one of the greatest live bands I've ever seen. I saw them at the Pitchfork curated All Tomorrow's Parties in 2008 and they blew everyone else out of the water. Their rhythmic, pulsating and energetic performance was typical of their live shows; a whirlwind of songs that flow seamlessly from one to the other amidst a jumble of swapped instruments and found objects. This was further enhanced by their appearance; mustached, real or fake, war painted and in all-white, they looked like a band formed by the dudes from the 118 118 adverts.

They come to Brighton (for the first time I believe) on a rare visit to the UK which features a mere 2 dates to promote their new album on Anti. I implore you to come, this will be an awesome show!

The show is at Sticky Mike's Frog Bar on 13th September. Tickets are available from Resident Music (01273 606312), Rounder Records (01273 325440), Ape, Seetickets and WeGotTickets.

Here is an idea of what they do;

No More shows till September!

So yeah, the summer sucks in Brighton. For promoters anyway. Why go to a show when you can sit on the beach and get drunk for £1 a can?

We had some amazing shows in May with Thomas Truax & one of my musical heroes Charles Hayward, but now we're calling it a day till September. We have some great announcements to make shortly about our first shows & return of our clubnight which will be in September.

In the meantime, enjoy this:

cheers!

New Date for Thomas Truax show

Howdy folks,

I'm sure many of you were disappointed to hear that the Thomas Truax gig on 18th March had to be postponed, but we're happy to announce that we have a new date; Thursday 5th May. Unfortunately we couldn't get a new date at The Green Door Store, it's a popular place now y'see, but we've found a new home for the show at Jam, on Middle Street. Old tickets will obviously still be valid.

In other news, the Errors show at the Hope is selling well - if you haven't got a ticket, I wouldn't hang around! Support comes from Cinemascopes and one more tbc.

News on our April clubnight headliner soon!

New Show: Band of Skulls!

It's always good when a band from your hometown escapes and makes music that is heard by more than 5 people outside of the said town's postcode. My hometown is Southampton and very few bands escape. Band of Skulls are one of only 3 bands in my memory that have done so and they've done so in style; I-Tunes single of the week, world tours, selling out the 2000 capacity Forum in London last year and appearing on The Twilight sound track to name a few highlights.

The band bring their ballsy blues rock to The Green Door store on Thursday 31st March, in what is definitely a intimate venue for the band!

Tickets are available from Rounder, Resident, Ape, Seetickets and WeGotTickets. This will definitely sell out (at the time of writing it's a third of the way there and it's been on sale since Wednesday), so pick up your tickets asap!

Other LTN news...
We have a logo! It's up there! It was done by this talented chap: Billy Mather. Check his stuff out and I dunno, buy something of his, or commission him to paint characters on the outside of your house.

Suuns show is THIS SUNDAY. The album is Rounder Records' album of the year so far, and quite frankly I can see why, it's flipping amazing! Support comes from 2 of my favourite local acts Vile Imbeciles and Restlesslist.

Here's a video:

Super intimate Errors show!

Howdy!

Big news this. One of Love Thy Neighbour's all time favourite bands will be playing & DJing for us on the 8th of April at The Hope. If you do maths as well as I do, you will be aware that The Hope is a very small space for them to play in and if you love them as much as I do, will also know that this will be a show not to miss!

The band will be releasing a very limited edition picture-disc for the tour (which only consists of 4 dates) featuring 2 new songs; Magna Encarta & Ganymede. This follows up 2010's critically acclaimed 'Come Down With Me' album, which itself spawned the brilliantly titled 'Celebrity Come Down With Me'. This album was in my personal top 5 of 2010, and featured in several end of year lists by people that matter too.

If that isn't all exciting enough (A BLOODY PICTURE-DISC PEOPLE!!!), the band will also be DJing at our club night, which conveniently falls on the same night at the same venue. More conveniently, anyone who buys a ticket for the early show will also get free entry to the clubnight, which will also feature an as yet, unknown band.

So, tickets are currently available here and here, but will soon be available at Resident, Rounder & Ape.

And, as always, here's a video, of 'Supertribe' one of the highlights of 'Come Down With Me'

Love Thy Neighbour News Round Up!

So, quite a few bits and pieces have happened in the last week or so, and I guess I should tell you right?

Well, firstly was our club night with Restlesslist and Dan Smith, which went rather well indeed; it was really busy, we got drunk and people seemed to be having fun. We can't wait for the next one on 11th February!

Right. A few things to tell you about. We now have complete line ups for The Suuns and Bearsuit shows. The Suuns line up really is a cracker; with support coming from LTN favourites Vile Imbeciles and stars of our first club night Restlesslist. I cannot wait for this show!

Bearsuit will be supported by the wonderful Flash Bang Band and Nathaniel and the Translators, who feature at least a few members of The Hornblower Brothers, which is no bad thing at all.

The only bad bit of news is that Pet Moon has had to pull out of our March club night due to a change in band members. We hope to have them back soon and will make an announcement about who will be playing that show shortly!

Right, I'll leave you with two videos, completely unrelated to the above, but featuring the bloody brilliant Esben and The Witch. They have an album out soon. I've heard it, it's good, but don't take my word for it, listen to Jack Black. He's famous, so he must be right.

Loads of News: Club Night this Friday, Bearsuit & Thomas Truax shows confirmed!

There's almost too much to talk about here, so I'm going to have to be brief...

Firstly. Our club night at The Hope starts THIS FRIDAY! Featuring the wonderously un-pigeon-hole-able Restlesslist, the blissful electronica of London's Dan Smith and DJ sets from Love Thy Neighbour resident DJs and Esben and the Witch, long favourites of mine.

Restlesslist and Esben have been featured on this blog in times gone past, so here's a link to a Dan Smith track Icarus;

icarus by BASTILLE

Right, also, 2 new shows to tell you about! Both acts have been knocking around for a while now, and rightly so. First up on Sunday 27th February at The Hope is the madcap stop-start girl/boy cutie-riot grrrl-punk whirlwind that is Bearsuit. John Peel was a big fan, and that's certainly where I first picked up on this great band, who hail from the musical hot-bed that is Norwich. Their first album since 2007 is due this year, which is very exciting indeed.

'Frantic, retro space age, riotously cute disco-punk with the odd throwback to early Belle and Sebastian dropped in, all casual like, lollipop-innocent and coy glances like they hope you won't notice' Everett True

'In an era when almost everything is quite like something else, Bearsuit are not quite like anything' John Peel

'Cinematic doodlings, screamy art punk, and many twists and turns, condensed into less than half an hour of fine, left-field pop' The Independent

Tickets are £6.50 in advance and are available from here, as well as Rounder Records and Resident Music.

And lastly, but certainly not least, is the fantastic news that Thomas Truax will be gracing Brighton with his presence once again on Friday 18th March. Playing at the brand spanking new Green Door Store, this will certainly be a treat. To explain his live show to someone who hasn't seen him before is pointless, you simply must see him. A born entertainer, he will captivate the audience from the off, and his collection of bizarre home-made instruments are a sight to behold. He has recorded an album of David Lynch covers and last year released his 5th album, Sonic Dreamer.

"There's always a feeling you're listening to something different, something knowingly funny, and something very very special." 8/10 -Drowned In Sound

Tickets are £6 in advance and are available here, Resident Music and Rounder Records.

Here is a video that highlights how bloody awesome he is:

Charles Hayward of This Heat, Massacre & Camberwell Now to play The Green Door Store!

I'm super excited about this. For those of you who read my first blog post, it included 3 videos by some of my favourite tunes, one of which was Health and Efficiency by This Heat. It's safe to say I never expected to put on any musicians associated with this band, but, well, what do you know, it's gone and happened. This Heat's co-founder and leader Charles Hayward will be playing a Love Thy Neighbour show on 31st May at The Green Door Store.

This Heat were influenced by Throbbing Gristle, Can and Lee 'Scratch' Perry and existed in the late 70's and are widely considered the missing link between Krautrock and post-punk and noise. As well as This Heat, he has also played with Gong, Crass and The Raincoats, formed bands such as Quiet Sun (with Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music) and Camberwell Now and joined Fred Frith & Bill Laswell's experimental rock act Massacre. His current one-man show is an intoxicating mix of percussive attack, swirling electronics and lyrical fragment collage.

THE WIRE MAGAZINE / SONAR FESTIVAL 2007 report (Lisa Blanning & Andy Tait)
The appeal of ex-This Heat drummer Charles hayward’s mastery of performance does not seem to fade. Thundering away over homemade backing tracks while howling abrasive vocals, he theatrically halts the music and stares out into the crowd as if enraged

JEAN-HERVE PERON (FAUST)
He sweats, there is saliva coming out of his mouth,
and he looks ugly and beautiful at the same time and he is there.

SOUND PROJECTOR
Telepathic magic……. Hayward is one of the most life-affirming people who stalks this dark globe
.

So, yeah, I'm very excited by this. So excited I haven't mentioned the rather wonderful support act, Capillary Action. I'll do that in another blog shortly, I'm sure you're meant to be working or something. Tickets for this show will be £7 in advance, available from Seetickets and shortly available from Resident, Rounder and WeGotTickets.
Here's one of Charles Hayward's solo tunes. Go to here for more. Enjoy!!
